License My Company Data

Can our Shopify history be licensed to AI companies, and how do we get it out?

Updated October 25, 2026 · How we research

Possibly, but Shopify data is mostly about shoppers, so customer privacy is the main limit. Shopify lets you export orders, customers and products as CSV (comma-separated values, a plain spreadsheet format) files from the admin, with larger exports emailed to you and the store owner. Some buyers instead connect with read-only access through an app.

What lives in Shopify, and why would buyers care?

A Shopify store holds orders, line items, products and descriptions, customers, discounts, fulfillment status, and payment records. It shows what sold, when, at what price, and how orders were fulfilled.

Buyers building commerce and retail tools may value real order patterns and product catalogs. Product descriptions and order notes can also be useful. Customer identities are usually not what they want, and are where most of the risk sits.

Usually in scope

  • Work conversations about operations
  • Tickets, tasks and project histories
  • Process documents and SOPs
  • Orders, invoices and workflow records, de-identified
  • Code repositories you own outright

Commonly left out

  • HR, payroll and personnel files
  • Board, legal and M&A material
  • Direct messages and private channels
  • Data you hold for customers under contract
  • Health, financial-account or other regulated personal data
You set the scope in writing: which systems, which dates, and what is excluded. Check customer contracts and privacy duties with your lawyer.

How does a Shopify export work?

As of October 2026, Shopify's help center describes CSV exports from the admin:

  • Orders: exported from the Orders page. Up to 50 orders download directly; larger or date-based exports are emailed to you and the store owner. Exports include order totals, line items, SKUs (stock-keeping units), billing and shipping addresses, and payment references, with an optional transaction history file.
  • Customers: exported from the Customers page as CSV, up to 15 MB. The file holds customer contact details, and tags and metafields can be added. If the person exporting is not the store owner, the file is also sent to the owner.
  • Shopify says large order exports take time; it gives the example of about four hours for 400,000 items.

Who has to be involved?

Shopify's pages do not spell out staff permission rules for exports, but they note that larger files go to the store owner's email. Have the store owner approve and run any export intended for licensing.

Is a connector easier?

Some buyer programs ask for read-only access instead of files, often through an app installed on the store. Apps request specific access scopes, such as reading orders or customers. Only approve scopes that match the license, and confirm how copied data is deleted at the end.

What should stay out?

  • Customer names, emails, phone numbers, and street addresses.
  • Payment references and anything resembling card details.
  • Marketing consent lists.
  • Order notes that contain personal messages, gift notes, or health details.
  • Wholesale or B2B (business-to-business) customer terms under confidentiality.

What rights questions apply?

Shopify's terms generally let merchants export their store data. But shopper data is governed by your own privacy policy and laws such as the CCPA (California Consumer Privacy Act), which can limit sharing or selling personal information. Product images or descriptions supplied by brands may also belong to them. Read our guides on de-identification and on employee and customer privacy, and talk to your lawyer.

Where should you start with Shopify data?

Read your store's privacy policy first, since what you told shoppers shapes what you can license. Then decide whether the license covers only products and order patterns or also support and order notes. Exports of more than 50 orders also go to the store owner's email, so the owner should be involved from the start.

Common questions

Can we license order data without customer names?

That is the usual approach. Remove or replace names, contact details, and addresses before sharing.

Why did the store owner get our export email?

Shopify sends larger exports to the store owner as well as the person who requested them.

Does our privacy policy matter?

Yes. What you told shoppers about sharing their data can limit licensing. Ask your lawyer to review it.

Are product descriptions safe to license?

If you wrote them, usually. Descriptions or images supplied by brands may belong to those brands.
